An Exploration of Feminist Artists on Social Media

Curatorial Statement
As social media becomes increasingly prevalent, so does the idea that our bodies must conform to societal standards. The female body has always been sexualized and subject to the male gaze, which is heightened through social media and interactions on the platform. At the same time, social media platforms have created a space for feminists and artists to come together and create empowering content while sharing resources around a range of issues including body image and oppression, eating disorders, and sexism.
For our final project, our curated collection of work by feminist artists showcases how social media influences body image, both positively and negatively. With the youngest generation growing up in the first digital age, the lasting impacts of social media on various aspects of society is unknown. In addition, with the rise of influencers and social media stars that create unrealistic expectations and ideals, body image perceptions and body positivity have come to the forefront of social media.
